Scale

2 c. milk

2 c. water

1 pkg. yeast

½ c. very warm water

¼ c. sugar, divided

5 T. lard

3 t. salt

Instructions

Scald 2 cups milk and 2 cups water.  Soak yeast in ½ cup very warm water.  Add 2 T. sugar to the yeast mixture, and 2 T. sugar to the milk/water.  Add the lard and salt to the hot milk mixture.  Add half of the flour and mix.  Add enough flour to make a rather stiff dough.

Let rise to double in bulk. Kneed down and let raise once more.  Form in loaves and let rise for 1 hour.

Have oven at 425 degrees and bake 10 minutes, then turn down to 375 degrees.  Bake for 40 minutes longer.
