Baked Alaska
*This is another recipe that I have demonstrated for years in my Creative Meal classes.
Ingredients
1 qt. ice cream (any flavor) I use Neapolitan
1 -9” prepared cake (any flavor)
6 egg whites
1 t. vanilla
½ t. cream of tartar
2/3 c. sugar
Instructions
Bake cake as directed on the pkg. Transfer cake to a baking sheet. Placing a brown paper bag between the cookie sheet and cake helps seal the edges. Place ice cream on top of the cake.
Meringue:
Beat egg whites, vanilla, and cream of tartar till soft peaks form (tips curl). Gradually add sugar, beating till stiff peaks form (tips stand straight). Spread meringue over cake and ice cream, sealing edge to baking sheet. Place oven rack in the lowest position.
Bake in a 500 degree oven for 4-5 minutes or until golden brown.
Serve immediately. Makes 8 servings.
